The Process
From your first conversation to a fully commissioned system, here's exactly how solar installation works with BlackRock Electrical in Abingdon and across Oxfordshire.
01
Enquiry
You get in touch. We have an initial chat to understand your property, energy use and goals, including
how much solar is likely to cost.
What we'll need
A quick conversation about your property and what you're hoping to achieve. A recent energy bill if you have one to hand, it helps us design the right system.
02
Site Survey
We visit your property to assess roof orientation, pitch, shading, your consumer unit and access. The right survey means an accurate proposal.
What we'll need
Access to your loft, consumer unit and roof view, plus a chat about where you'd like the inverter and battery to go. Around 45 to 60 minutes of your time.
03
We Propose
You receive your personalised proposal with system design, performance estimates, costs and finance options. Once you're happy with the design, you sign the proposal to confirm.
What you'll need
A bit of time to review the design and ask any questions. Sign off on the proposal.
05
Cooling-Off Period
You have a 14-day cooling-off period from the date of contract signature. You can cancel for any reason during this time, no questions asked.
What we'll need
Nothing. Time and space to be sure.
06
Applications
We submit the
DNO application and any required approvals. This typically takes 14 to 30 working days, and runs alongside your cooling-off period.
What we'll need
Nothing from you. We handle the technical detail and submit your DNO application on your behalf.
07
Installation Scheduled
Once the cooling-off period ends and approvals are in place, we will confirm your installation date.
What you'll need
A confirmed date that works for you. Roof and parking access on the day.
Typical Timeline
From contract signature to installation is typically 3 to 6 weeks, depending on DNO turnaround.
Weeks 1–2 – Cooling-off period (applications run alongside)
Weeks 3–6 – DNO approval window
Installation – once approvals are in place
Important
The 14-day cooling-off period is a legal requirement designed to protect you.

Getting Paid for Your Solar
We'll guide you through export tariffs like
SEG and
Octopus Flux, so you earn more on the electricity you export.

Peace of Mind
Backed by a 6-year insurance-backed warranty, plus MCS, manufacturer warranties and our commitment to quality.
BlackRock Electrical installed my home solar PV system and battery storage. A lovely, professional and friendly team arrived and did a great job. They clearly took pride in their work; not least ensuring all the labels are beautifully aligned. Support following the installation has been really superb. I can't fault this company and would happily recommend them.

Why BlackRock?
Choosing solar is a serious decision. You're investing thousands in your home or business, and you need a team that treats that investment with the respect it deserves.
We've spent years installing electrical and renewable systems across Oxfordshire, working in homes, schools, care settings and commercial buildings. The same standards we bring to those projects, where things really can't go wrong, are the standards we bring to your install.
That's what "done properly" means to us. Honest pricing, certified work, and a team that picks up the phone long after the panels are on the roof. See exactly what we install on our home solar and EV charging page.
Solar Installs in Abingdon
Solar installs across Abingdon and the surrounding Oxfordshire villages are a core part of what we do. A recent project ran through our usual 8 step process, from the first roof survey to switch on, with the panels, inverter and battery fitted and the Smart Export Guarantee paperwork handled for the customer from start to finish. As one client put it in a five star review:
"Excellent experience from start to finish. Turned up on time, clear pricing, and the work was completed to a high standard."
Every system we install is MCS certified, so it qualifies for SEG export payments and comes fully warrantied.
MCS certified installers
The MCS standard is the UK benchmark for solar quality and safety. Every system we install is signed off by a certified engineer, which is also what unlocks your right to claim Smart Export Guarantee payments.
HIGH QUALITY, RELIABLE PRODUCTS
We only specify kit from manufacturers we've worked with for years, including Solis, SolaX, Sigenergy and myenergi. Robust hardware, real warranties, and parts we can actually service down the line.
Expert project management
One point of contact from your first call to final commissioning. We handle the surveys, the DNO applications, scaffolding and paperwork, so you don't have to chase anyone.
Transparent pricing
Your proposal sets out exactly what your system costs, what it will generate and what it will save you. No hidden extras, no last-minute fees, and finance options if you need them.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do solar panels cost in Abingdon and Oxfordshire?
How Much Does Solar Cost?Cost depends on system size, panel quality, inverter choice and whether you add battery storage or EV charging.
For a full breakdown of prices and what changes them, read our guide to how much solar panels cost in Oxfordshire.
How long does it take to install solar panels?
The installation itself usually takes 1 to 3 days on site, depending on system size and roof type. The full journey from signing your contract to switch-on is typically 3 to 6 weeks, which includes your 14-day cooling-off period and the DNO approval window.
Is my roof suitable for solar panels?
Most pitched roofs across Abingdon and Oxfordshire are suitable for solar, including south, east and west-facing orientations. The key factors are pitch angle, shading from trees or neighbouring buildings, and roof condition. We carry out a physical site survey on every job to confirm what's possible for your property.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels?
For most domestic installs, no. Solar panels are usually considered permitted development under UK rules. Listed buildings, conservation areas and some flat-roof commercial properties may need permission. We'll flag this clearly during your site survey if it applies to your property.
How much can I save with solar panels?
Savings depend on your energy usage, system size, the tariff you're on and how much electricity you export to the grid. We base your proposal on your actual usage data, so the figures you see are specific to your property rather than a generic estimate. Smart Export Guarantee payments are also added on top of bill savings.
Do solar panels work on cloudy days in the UK?
Yes. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunshine, so they still produce useful power on overcast days. UK panels are designed and tested for our climate. Output is lower in winter and higher in summer, and a properly sized system generates well across the full year.
What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) and how do I get paid?
The Smart Export Guarantee is a UK government scheme that pays you for any solar electricity you export to the national grid. To receive payments, you need an MCS certificate and a registration with an SEG-paying supplier like Octopus, EDF or E.ON. We handle the registration on your behalf so payments start as soon as your system is live.
What warranties come with a BlackRock solar installation?
Every BlackRock solar installation is backed by a 6-year insurance-backed warranty covering the installation itself, plus manufacturer warranties on panels, inverters and batteries. We also provide full documentation, MCS certification and an annual health check.
Do solar panels need maintenance?
Solar panels need very little maintenance day to day. We recommend an annual visual check, which we include in our aftercare. Rain usually keeps them clean.
What happens to my solar system if I move house?
Solar systems usually stay with the property when you move, and they're a recognised selling point that can add value and reduce time on market. We provide full documentation and certificates so the new owner has everything they need. If you'd like to take the system with you, that's possible too, though removal and reinstallation costs apply.
Can I add a battery to my solar system?
Yes. Adding battery storage lets you use more of the electricity you generate, especially in the evening and overnight. We install battery systems from manufacturers including Sigenergy, Duracell and SolaX, sized to match your household energy use. Batteries can be added at install time or retrofitted to an existing system.
Will solar panels work with my EV charger?
Yes. Solar and EV charging work really well together, especially with smart chargers that prioritise charging when your panels are generating. We're approved installers for Andersen EV and myenergi, so we can design a system that combines solar, battery and EV charging on a single dashboard.
